Dippy Eggs (Carbon Footprint #42)

Dippy Eggs and Soldiers | charcoal and pastel still life drawing | 16x12"

There is something elegantly simple about a soft boiled egg for lunch. It doesn't take a bunch of elaborate preparation; it's a quick shot of protein to sustain that "big push" through the afternoon slump, but most of all it stirs a childlike joy in being allowed to play with my food

What a glorious week for a road trip!

St John on the Mountain, Bernardsville, NJ

I have spent a fabulous few days, trekking round NJ delivering work, whilst enjoying the fall sunshine and magnificent autumnal display. And as a splendid reward for my efforts, I have just learned that Red Onion, Center Stage has won an Award of Excellence Woohoo! - I feel a pie celebration is imminent

A Dusty Cluster - new still life oil painting

A Dusty Cluster - still life oil painting of juicy grapes  |  20" x 16"

Another of the summer's juicy new paintings finally hit the scanner this week.

Juicy red burgundy merging with deep black purple, the dusty lavender bloom and golden highlights - such fun to try and capture. And at 20" x 16' these are grapes are a monster vintage!

Luscious Fruits of the Summer

Chakaia Booker at Visual Arts Center in Summit NJ

Chakaia Booker at the Sculpture Park NJCVA

Chakaia Booker's feathery rubber teepee emerging from behind a chartreuse bank of grass - simply stunning in the fall sunshine. Organic shapes from industrial waste, casting dramatic shadows and framing views of the landscape beyond. Treasure from trash - just my kind of thing

And as the rubber tires gently warm in the sunshine, the pungent smell adds another level of enjoyment Smelly Sculpture - marvelous!

Although the gallery show ends in December, the outdoor sculptures will remain until next July. I can't wait to see these in the snow...surrounded by daffodils...drenched by spring rains...bleached and weathered by the summer sun

Farewell to Summer?

LA Sunset, colored pencil miniature landscape

Two weeks ago I was cursing the humidity; oppressed by the ever singing cicadas and joyfully buying furry boots in anticipation of the glorious snows to come

But this week summer seems to be making a premature departure here in the Northeast US, and I feel slightly cheated. Surely there should be at least two more weeks before my house is full of crispy leaves and I risk being brained by an acorn just taking out the trash

So I wondered if a West Coast LA sunset, complete with sun-kissed palms, might conjure us up a few more weeks, maybe even an Indian Summer. pretty please?

Sweet and Sour : Carbon Footprint #41

Sweet and Sour : charcoal and pastel still life drawing

It is a well tested phenomenon that 20 minutes after eating a Chinese meal, you want another one Seems it goes for drawing them too

During the last large still life drawing, I discovered that splendid orange shadow cast on the noodle box and knew it needed a picture of its own - more space to breath

I am loving this paper too - Johannot by Canson - it gives a very soft, velvety finish to the drawing that I really like. I am keeping working notes on all the papers I try in an online scrapbook. So if you are another weirdo who loves paper a little too much, then leave me a recommendation for your favorite at The Paperphiles

Hey, for some women it's shoes - me, I go weak at the knees in a paper store. I remember the day I found Kate's Paperie in New York - boy that was a good day!

(Actually, I quite like shoes too)

More Magical Woodland Drawings

Well the new shelves are really paying off - I have 4 new oil paintings drying, as well as the promised second Chinese Take Out drawing And whilst they were drying, I found time to finish the second embellished giclee print. This one is in Red Oxide, Violet, Oxide Green Tint and a few smudges of White

I think I shall treat myself to another charcoal forest drawing soon, just because they are so much fun to draw And now I just need to organize some more drying space

Hmmmm - more shelves?
